So I decided to spend the festive period in Lagos and life decides to grace me with a surprise. All of a sudden my friends turn family leave town to one place or another. Didn’t see that one coming.
“Why are you not coming home madam”, was my mom’s reply when I informed her of my decision. ‘Madam’ is what she calls me every time I make a decision she knows she can’t talk me out of.
Life and it’s twisted ends tends to play tricks on our minds, it would have been nice if I had some modicum of discretion partaining to how this end of year would have looked like. But I guess we can’t always predict what’s going to happen.

I mean can’t a girl just just eat all her cake and have it just once? I really just wanted to spend this period out of my comfort zone and break the routine. For as long as I can remember cooking tirelessly from the day before Christmas to the day itself has been my routine. This is usually followed by serving throughout the day with chin chin crunches in between meals.
Was definitely looking forward to another Christmas routine this time around and guess what? I SLEPT THROUGH IT. Lol
So much for a change of routine! Smh
What I Did
- Make new friends..NETWORK! It doesn’t help that I’m more introverted than I will like to admit but I’m learning to be more outgoing and responsive to meeting new people. But I did create some new connections and also working on reinforcing new ones.
- Explore your creativity. You will be surprised at how much you can learn when you have a lot of free time on your hands. This has been my mood for a while now trying to dig in and discover my hidden talents. This festive period being by myself is put a lot of things into perspective. I admit I learnt stuff I wouldn’t normally take out time to learn.
- Learn to have fun by yourself: Argh I feel like this is highly underrated. A lot of times we tend to subject those around us the responsibility for making us happy. What, I can’t go to a nice restaurant and eat all by myself? Enjoying your own company is KEY. Only then will others enjoy it too. I think there is a saying about loving yourself or something within these lines, yeah.
There were definitely times when the smallest things made me feel the most empty and other times when I laughed them off. It’s all part of the process and the only way is to live it one day at a time.
I won’t say I’m one for new year resolutions in that sense. It’s more of setting goals and having a plan to work towards those goals individual. Also, penning them somewhere private and monthly evaluations is kinda my thing.
Still penning down those goals right at this moment.
Thanks for reading and Happy New Year!
